Identify the obturator internus muscle [probe; retractor holds the sciatic nerve]. Its tendon also traverses the lesser sciatic foramen. The tendon of the obturator internus muscle [probe; retractor holds the sciatic nerve] inserts into the deep surface of the greater trochanter of the femur.

Next, identify the gemelli muscles. The superior gemellus muscle arises from the ischial spine and lies superior to the tendon of obturator internus muscle. The inferior gemellus muscle arises from the ischial tuberosity and lies inferior to the tendon of obturator internus muscle.

Finally, identify the quadratus femoris muscle, which lies inferior to both gemelli muscles. This muscle arises from the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the intertrochanteric crest of the femur.
