Research Scientist/Fellow/Scholar
Research Scientist/Fellow/Scholar
Research Scientist
Function: To carry out independent research and
provide training and supervision to research assistants and graduate students
and may be called upon to help in teaching for departmental graduate courses.
The reason for this title is the need to provide a title
for individuals with a Ph.D. or M.D. who are performing basic science research.
A staff title like “Research Scientist” allows certain individuals to obtain
external grant support and does not cross the faculty title series which are
covered by the AAUP-University Contract. These will be positions are tied
directly to the ability to obtain funding from grants to support their salaries
and to maintain support for a research program. This is a very useful title in
many universities and one that is recognized by federal and/or non-federal
agencies for an individual to have a funded research project which can be
supported by their agency. Funded research programs bring considerable dollars
to the university and represents an economic boost to the community. The
individual appointed in these positions will have a Ph.D. or M.D. and will be
individuals who are well-trained and able to establish an active research
program (much like the “Research Assistant Professor” only not considered at the
faculty level). This title series is also similar to the Research Associate
title but because a Research Associate title encompasses individuals at all
degrees, Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D., it is not recognized by federal and/or
non federal agencies as a staff position used by individuals who are scientists
and are able to have an active research program.
