Criteria

The College criteria is currently undergoing revision.

Please check back for updates.

This document provides broad guidelines for appointment-reappointment, promotion, and tenure in the College of Medicine and is not intended to supplant or supersede contractual agreements negotiated by the University of Cincinnati and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). Because the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Provost for Health Affairs must approve departmental criteria for appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure (ARPT), a committee of the faculty, appointed by the Dean, worked generally with various groups of faculty and committees and, specifically, with Faculty Council, to develop these guidelines which serve as the broad umbrella of principles applicable to all departments and acceptable to the Dean and Provost. ARPT recommendations and the length of each reappointment shall be initiated by the academic unit based upon specific criteria and procedures developed by the members of the academic unit. In developing the specific criteria, individual departments may

  1. write guidelines consistent with the principles outlined in the College of Medicine faculty guidelines, but separate from it.
  2. use the College of Medicine guidelines and add an appendix that gives more specific information about their departmental requirements or
  3. use the College of Medicine guidelines without modification as their departmental criteria.

The standards and criteria described in this document shall be reviewed every three years and, if warranted, revised. This document will also be revised as necessary to reflect changes in the contractual AAUP agreements. The AAUP agreement requires that departments develop their own detailed criteria which the Dean and the Provost for Health Affairs of the College of Medicine must approve. As in the case for College of Medicine Faculty Guidelines, departmental criteria will be reviewed by departments, updated as necessary, and submitted to the Dean and Provost for approval no less frequently than every three years.

Approved by Faculty Council at its meeting of November 9, 2000.
