Non-Tenure Tracks

The non-tenure tracks are also referred to as "qualified" tracks, and faculty members in these tracks are said to have "qualified" titles. Faculty in the qualified tracks shall be appointed or reappointed for a term of not less than one year nor more than five years, with the exception of those individuals appointed for the term of a grant or contract. For all individual faculty members with qualified titles who are also clinical faculty members (see preamble, page 5), regardless of rank or track, all written appointment or reappointment contracts shall provide for a one year notice of nonreappointment unless a longer or shorter notice of nonreappointment is agreed to between the academic unit head and the clinical faculty member with a qualified title. Note that, under the 1995-1998 AAUP contract, the provisions of article 7 shall not apply to clinical faculty members with a qualified title. One (but not the only) consequence of this is that the AAUP contract does not detail, specify, nor guarantee any review deadlines for reappointment or promotion for clinical faculty members with qualified titles.

For all faculty members with qualified titles who are not clinical faculty members, article 7 does apply, and the review deadlines for reappointment and promotion and the time lines for notice of nonreappointment are outlined in article 7 of the AAUP contract. Transfer between tracks is contingent upon meeting the appropriate criteria for the new appointment and is subject to the appropriate review sequence. Transfer must be initiated by the faculty member and approved by the department chair and the dean.
