Track Description
The Clinical Track (CT) is designed for physician/clinicians/Ph.D.s who primarily are devoted to patient care and service; however, teaching is required in this track. Generally, candidates must be board eligible or certified when applicable. Faculty in this track shall be appointed or reappointed for a minimum of one year and not more than five years, with the exception of those individuals appointed for the term of a grant or contract. The terms of appointment, reappointment, and notice of nonreappointment for both clinical and non-clinical faculty members in this qualified track are described at the beginning of Section II.
It is anticipated that most clinical faculty initially will be appointed to this track. Clinicians who develop a major commitment to laboratory or clinical scholarship may qualify for transfer to the tenure track in either of the two tenure pathways. If it is the intent to transfer to one of the tenure tracks after initial appointment, this should be stated in the initial letter of appointment. Whether stated in the letter of appointment or not, transfer to any other track is neither automatic nor guaranteed and requires approval of the Dean and Senior Vice President to create a tenure track position. After that approval, the process to be followed is the same as that for reappointment including recommendations to the Dean by Departmental and College Committees as well as the Department Director. Transfer to a different track depends upon many factors including, but not limited to, the documentation that the candidate fulfills and will continue to fulfill the criteria for that track.
CT II.A(1) - CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT
Appointment in the Clinical Track requires specialty training. Generally, when applicable, board certification or eligibility for certification is expected. Qualifications include documented interest, ability, and commitment to providing competent, caring, and individualized patient care and an interest in the teaching programs of the college.
CT II.A(1)a - INSTRUCTOR
Appointment as Instructor is generally for individuals who have recently completed training programs and are just beginning their independent professional careers. Their scholastic and postgraduate performance and educational background are the major factors to be considered when determining appointment as an instructor.
CT II.A(1)b - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Instructor. Appointment as Assistant Professor is based on the applicant's ability to provide excellent patient care according to the standards set by the candidate's department. Requirements for documentation of such excellence must be provided in departmental criteria for this track. Participation in the teaching program of the College is required.
CT II.A(1)c - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor requires continuous demonstration of excellence in patient care. Board certification and/or recertification is expected except in rare circumstances. Local recognition as a consultant in a clinical specialty, invitations for speaking engagements in clinical matters, and extensive clinical practice are necessary for promotion to the Associate Professor level. The individual should be capable of handling all common and most unusual clinical situations in the relevant areas of expertise. Contributions to education in the course of clinical practice is required. Participation in clinical research and in service and/or administrative matters of the Department, College, and/or University are also positive factors in promotion, but are not mandatory.
CT II.A(1)d - PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Appointment as Professor requires continued excellence in patient care, regional recognition as a general consultant in the specialty and vigorous clinical practice. Senior clinicians should be capable of managing all patients with disorders related to their specialties. On-going significant contributions to the educational and service and/or administrative affairs of the Department, College and University will add support to the application for promotion to Professor.
CT II.A(2) - REAPPOINTMENT
Appointment and reappointment in the Clinical Track is dependent on continued excellence in the provision of patient care and availability of funds sufficient to support the position. Individuals must have maintained relevant professional licensure and hospital staff privileges. Support of departmental goals in education, research and service and/or administration are required for reappointment.
CT II.A(3) - PROMOTION
Promotion to a higher academic rank requires fulfillment of criteria for that rank and the demonstration of continuing professional development in all areas.
CT II.A(4) - TENURE
Tenure in the clinical track is not an option. Tenure may not be granted to faculty in this track; however, individuals who fulfill the appropriate criteria may apply for transfer to the tenure track as described in either SECTION II.A or II.B.
