Track Description
Faculty members in the Adjunct Track perform teaching, research and service on a part-time basis for which they receive a salary from the University. In the College of Medicine, Adjunct Faculty are not members of the AAUP. Faculty members who are part-time at affiliated institutions may also hold the Adjunct title (adjunct although they are paid in full by the affiliate). Individuals appointed on the Adjunct Track possess all the professional/ academic qualifications of full-time faculty on the tenure, clinical, research, or field service tracks, as appropriate. Department directors or administrative heads must detail in initial letters of appointment and reappointment the job responsibilities and expectations for reappointment or promotion of adjunct faculty members.
AT II.D(1) - CRITERIA FOR INITIAL APPOINTMENT
Initial appointment or reappointment at any academic rank must meet the same requirements as appointment or reappointment in the equivalent full time Track. The qualified individual must perform a necessary service such as teaching, research, or university and community service.
AT II.D(1)a - INSTRUCTOR
Appointment as Instructor in the Adjunct Track requires credentials showing the individual has successfully completed training in a specialized area. Recommendations from mentors, advisors or other qualified individuals must indicate the individual's competence and interest in teaching, research or other service. Individuals at this rank usually have limited experience and participate in a very limited way in departmental responsibilities.
AT II.D(1)b - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Instructor. Appointment as Assistant Professor requires documentation of ongoing commitment and satisfactory performance of duties as outlined in the letter of appointment.
AT II.D(1)c - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Appointment as Associate Professor requires an on-going involvement with departmental programs and dedication of the individual to departmental goals and programs. There is an expectation of scholarly productivity (such as participation/presentations at regional and national meetings, and/or publications) or special accomplishments that enhance the profession.
AT II.D(1)d - PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Appointment as Professor is a distinct honor requiring continuing long-term and exceptional contributions to teaching, service and/or scholarly productivity. Documentation and recommendations are as indicated above for Associate Professor.
AT II.D(2) - REAPPOINTMENT
Reappointment is contingent upon the satisfactory performance of the candidate, the continued need for the faculty member's services, and the availability of appropriate funds to support the salary.
AT II.D(3) - PROMOTION
Promotion in the Adjunct Track reflects the importance of the candidate's role, the quality of performance, and recognition of an exemplary professional commitment.
