Track Description
Faculty members in the Volunteer Track generally are engaged in the private practice of medicine or are employed as research scientists outside the University of Cincinnati. They donate their services in the areas of teaching, research and patient care. No salary is received from the University. Appointments may be made for terms not to exceed five years. All volunteer appointments within a department will be reviewed whenever a new director is named. A new departmental director, at his/her discretion, may terminate such appointments prior to their ending dates.
VT II.E(1) - CRITERIA FOR INITIAL APPOINTMENT
Initial appointment at any academic rank in this track is defined by departmental criteria. The qualified individual must offer a necessary service such as teaching, research, or university and community service. An annual commitment of approximately 100 hours to the College is ordinarily expected; however, a shorter time commitment is appropriate for individuals who have rare expertise and/or provide demanding services over shorter periods of time, such as the supervision of a core clinical clerkship, a preceptorship, or an intensive, short graduate course. Credit is also earned by regular participation in College seminars and conferences such as grand rounds.
VT II.E(1)a - INSTRUCTOR
Appointment as Instructor requires a commitment by a qualified individual to contribute in a minimal, but meaningful, way to the departmental teaching, research, or clinical responsibilities. The candidate may have recently completed training and/or post-graduate work and thus has limited professional experience. A high aptitude for the candidate's area of expertise must be indicated in letters from mentors or other appropriate individuals.
VT II.E(1)b - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Instructor. Appointment as Assistant Professor requires documentation of qualifications and expertise in an area of departmental responsibilities such as teaching, research, or clinical care. Supporting recommendations are required from two members of the full-time faculty of the College of Medicine in addition to the department director's and department ARPT committee's recommendations.
VT II.E(1)c - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Appointment as Associate Professor requires extraordinary contributions and/or dedication to the fulfillment of departmental goals. There is an expectation of scholarly productivity (such as participation/ presentations at regional and national meetings, or publications) or special efforts that enhance the profession. Supporting recommendations are required from two members of the full-time faculty of the College, as well as two letters of recommendation from individuals outside the department. Recommendations from the department director and ARPT committee are required.
VT II.E(1)d - PROFESSOR
Candidates for appointment as Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Appointment as Professor is a distinct honor requiring continuing long term contributions to teaching, service and/or scholarly productivity. Supporting documentation and recommendations are required, as indicated for Associate Professor.
VT II.E(2) - REAPPOINTMENT
Reappointment requires recommendations from colleagues and the departmental director indicating the candidate has fulfilled all requirements of the rank. The value of the individual's contributions to the success of the departmental program(s) must be documented.
VT II.E(3) - PROMOTION
Promotion to a higher rank is an indication of the candidate's fulfillment of qualifications for that rank and extraordinary contributions to the department's teaching, research, or clinical programs. Supportive recommendations from colleagues within and outside the department, the department director and ARPT committee are required.
