Track Description

Faculty members in the Field Service Track are involved in teaching and support of research or patient care. Faculty in this track perform essential roles in the education, teaching, and research programs of the department, but may hold degrees such as Master of Social Work, Master of Audiology, or Ph.D. degrees in either science (e.g., physics, biology, anatomy, biochemistry, etc.) or other disciplines (e.g., ethics, philosophy, or psychology). These individuals contribute in special ways to departmental excellence in education, research and patient care. Ordinarily, Field Service faculty will have fewer commitments to departmental administration. It is essential that the department director or administrative head prepare a detailed job description for each Field Service faculty member to provide the guidelines for evaluation of performance by the departmental and College ARPT Committees.

Faculty in this track will be appointed or reappointed for a minimum of one year, not to exceed five years, with the exception of those individuals appointed for the term of a grant or contract. The terms of appointment, reappointment, and notice of nonreappointment for both clinical and non-clinical faculty members in this qualified track are described at the beginning of Section II.

FST II.C(1) - CRITERIA FOR INITIAL APPOINTMENT

Individuals appointed in the Field Service Track have successfully completed specialized training and have demonstrated (or have a high potential for) excellent performance in their principal area of responsibility and in teaching. These candidates are qualified to contribute significantly to the excellence of specific programs within a department.

FST II.C(1)a - INSTRUCTOR

Candidates for appointment as Instructor in the Field Service Track have recently completed their training in a specialized area and/or have limited experience in the application of their training. Recommendations from mentors, records showing commendable academic performance, and certification or licensure (as appropriate) are required.

FST II.C(1)b - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Instructor. Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor indicates that the candidate is qualified to contribute to essential programs within the department and has experience in teaching, research, and/or patient care.

FST II.C(1)c - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Candidates for appointment as Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Initial appointment as Field Service Associate Professor is based on a demonstrated high level of performance and significant contribution in the candidate's area of expertise at departmental, college, and university levels.

FST II.C(1)d - PROFESSOR

Candidates for appointment as Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Initial appointment as Field Service Professor is based on long?standing excellence in performance and major contributions in the individual's areas of responsibility. Achievement in other areas such as development of innovative courses, evaluation methods, and/or new research approaches has a favorable influence on the recommendation decision.

FST II.C(2) - REAPPOINTMENT

Reappointment in the Field Service Track is based upon evaluations of the individual's performance in both support and academic activities, as well as available funding for the position. Individuals must have maintained relevant professional licensure and hospital staff privileges.

FST II.C(3) - PROMOTION

Since some commitment to teaching is required, commendable performance in that area is an important criterion for promotion. For those faculty members whose main duties are to provide highly specialized expertise in support of patient care or research, evidence of excellence in the area of primary responsibility is required.

FST II.C(4) - TENURE

Tenure may not be granted to faculty in this track; however, individuals who fulfill the appropriate criteria may apply for transfer to the tenure track as described in either Section II.A or II.B.
