Policies on Course Work

Credits and Grades

Please refer to the Department of Environmental Health Graduate Student Guidelines Handbook for more detailed information on Master's and Doctoral Degree credit requirements.

The Master's student must complete 45 graduate credits excluding thesis research. Thirty credits should be regular course work. The doctoral student needs to complete 135 graduate credits, and 45 of these credits need to be completed while in residence at the University. The student must receive at least a grade of B on required coursework and also must maintain a B average of all courses (at least 2/3 of the graduate credits need to be graded as a B or better). In order to graduate, the student can not have an I, IP, or an N on their record.

Prerequisite: Undergraduate coursework in physiology, biology, chemistry, math and calculus.
For students entering the program with previous course work:

Courses taken at other Universities can be substituted for some of the course requirements (e.g. Mathematical statistics taken elsewhere can be used for the Mathematical Statistics requirement.). The substitution, however, does not change the requirements for the total hours of course work.

For Doctoral Students with a Master's Degree in a related field:

The student may be considered to have achieved up to 36 credit hours of the required 90 hours of non-dissertation work. The acceptance of credit hours depends on courses taken and how recently these were taken and will be reviewed by the Director.

For Doctoral Students with a Master's Degree and some additional relevant

credit hours:

The student may be able to credit some of the extra hours to their degree with a minimum requirement being 55 credit hours while enrolled in the Division.

For Students with non-degree credited courses from U.C.:

The student may receive credit up to 15 hours of relevant non-degree credited courses for the degree.

Advancement to Candidacy

For information on the Qualifying Examination (QE) process for doctoral students, refer to the Department of Environmental Health Graduate Student Handbook Guidelines.

At no time before or during the Qualifying Examination or committee meeting should refreshments be served. All phases of the QE are testing situations.

The three preliminary proposals should have different study designs and address different exposure/health outcome relationships. For Biostatistics students, one of the proposals may include an Epidemiologic study, and the other two should address different types of methodological statistical contributions in the field.

Thesis and Dissertation Requirements

Please refer to the Department of Environmental Health Graduate Student Handbook Guidelines for detailed information on thesis and dissertation requirements.

Because of the complexity of most human health studies, students in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division, must include an appendix that notes aspects of the dissertation or thesis performed by the student and who was responsible for each of the major parts of the study. This is needed because often the dissertation or thesis work requires the efforts of others. Topics needing to be addressed in the Appendix are, for example:

Who designed or created the questionnaire?
 Who administered the questionnaire?
Who worked with the Institutional Review Board?
Who obtained the informed consent? (a copy should appear in another appendix)
 Who did the laboratory determinations?
Who entered the data into the computer?
 Who did the computer programming?
 Who did the analysis?
Whose idea was the basic result?
Whose ideas were used in the methodologic efforts?
 Who talked with the patients/volunteers?
 Who did the literature review?
 Who financed the study?
