Professional Societies and
Organizations
The following is a non-comprehensive list of scientific societies in
Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Many societies offer student memberships at a
fraction of the cost of a full-membership. Look for information in their Web
pages.
 | American Diabetes Association Council on Epidemiology and Statistics.
Its purpose is to stimulate the exchange of information about the epidemiology
of diabetes, and to foster the application of epidemiologic methods to on the
etiology and pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications. To become a
member of the American Diabetes Association and receive 12 issues of the
magazine, Diabetes Forecast, as well as other benefits of membership,
costs $24.
|
 | American Public Health Association
(APHA). It is the oldest and
largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing
more than 50,000 members from over 50 occupations of public health. Student
membership is $50 per year, and students receive all the benefits of
membership, which include: the receipt of the Association's two journals, American
Journal of Public Health and The Nation's Health, discounted
registration fees for the APHA Annual Conference, and a 30% reduction in
prices for American Public Health Association texts. |
 | American Statistical Association
(ASA). It is a scientific and
educational society founded in 1839 to foster excellence in the use and
application of statistics to the biological, physical, social and economic
sciences. Student membership costs $25 per year and includes Amstat News,
STATS magazine, and the Directory of Members. |
 | Association for Professionals in Infection Control and
Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC).
Its purpose is to influence, support and improve the quality of health care
through the practice and management of infection control and the application of
epidemiology in all health settings. The association does not offer student
membership. The annual dues for Active members are $90 per year. Members receive
discounts on APIC journals such as: American Journal of Infection Control
(AJIC), APIC News, and the Infection Control in Long-Term Care
Facilities Newsletter. |
 | International Society for Environmental Epidemiology
(ISEE). The ISEE
provides a forum for the discussion of problems unique to the study of health
and the environment. Student Membership is $30.00. Students receive:
subscription to the society's official journal, Epidemiology, a directory
of all ISEE members, early notice of annual meetings, and reduced rate
registration at annual meetings. |
 | International Society for Exposure Analysis
(ISEA). The objective of
the ISEA is to foster and advance the science of exposure analysis related to
environmental contaminants, to human populations and activities, and to
ecosystems. Student membership costs $25 per year, which includes a
subscription to the Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental
Epidemiology. |
 | International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology
(ISPE). It is a
non-profit international professional membership organization dedicated to
promoting pharmacoepidemiology, the science which applies epidemiologic
approaches to studying the use, effectiveness, value and safety of
pharmaceuticals. Student membership is $35 per year. The perks of membership
include: a subscription to the Pharmacoepidemiology Newsletter, a
reduction in registration fees at the society's annual conference, and an 80%
reduction in cost for the journal, Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety. |
 | Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER). It was established in 1968 as
a forum for sharing the latest in epidemiologic research To date, the SER is
committed to keeping epidemiologists at the vanguard of scientific developments.
Student membership is $75 per year. Members receive: a subscription to the American
Journal of Epidemiology (24 issues), a subscription to Epidemiologic
Reviews (presently two issues per year), newsletters including abstract
forms and instructions for presenting papers at the annual meeting, notification
of fellowships, and information on Society activities, and the SER Directory of
members with names, address, and telephone numbers. |
 | Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America
(SHEA). It was organized
to foster the development and application of the science of healthcare
epidemiology. The society does not offer student membership. Those with Master's
Degrees or Doctorates are invited to apply for membership. Dues are $110 per
year, and members receive: a subscription to the Society's official journals: Infection
Control and Hospital Epidemiology and Clinical Performance and Quality
Health Care. |
Scientific Meetings
Scientific meetings are an excellent forum to discuss your results, learn
about the latest findings in your field, meet colleagues or find a job. See
information on Travel Awards to see if you are eligible for funding to attend a
meeting. Also, if you are working on a research study your advisor may assist.

Summer Courses
 | The New England Epidemiology Summer Program is open to students and
practitioners in the fields of epidemiology and public health, occupational
and environmental science, toxicology, health administration, medicine,
nursing and allied professions. The program is hosted by Tufts University,
located in the suburbs north of Boston. http://epidemiology.com/neei.htm |
 | Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan.
The primary objective of the program is to provide intensive instruction in
the principles, methods, and applications of epidemiology. One week, two week,
and three week courses are offered. Examples of some of the courses from
Summer 1997 are: Fundamentals of Epidemiology, Pharmacoepidemiology,
Introduction to Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis, Clinical Trials-Design
and Conduct. http://www.sph.umich.edu/group/epid/gss.html |
 | Graduate Summer Program in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University.
This program is intended to develop an understanding of basic and advanced
principles of epidemiologic research and will offer courses that present
epidemiologic methods and their application to the study of the natural
history and etiology of disease. One and three week courses are offered.
Examples of some of the courses offered in the Summer 1997 program include:
Use of Microcomputers in Epidemiology, Epidemiology of AIDS, and Epidemiology
and Public Policy. http://www.sph.jhu.edu/Departments/Epi/summer.html |
 | Modern Approaches to the Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Disease,
a three week course presented by the Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious
Disease, part of the Zoology Department in the University of Oxford. This
course is designed to introduce participants to a particular approach to the
epidemiology and population dynamics of infectious diseases. http://www.ceid.ox.ac.uk/course/course-shortcourse.html |
 | International Agency for Research on Cancer programme of training courses.
Their aim is to improve knowledge among cancer researchers worldwide,
particularly in areas where local opportunities for instruction are limited.
Topics covered include: basic and intermediate cancer epidemiology, advanced
statistical methods in cancer epidemiology, detection of health hazards using
mutagenicity and related tests, molecular biology for epidemiologists, cancer
pathology for non-pathologists, genetic and molecular epidemiology,
