Environmental and Industrial Hygiene

This program seeks to prepare individuals with the skills, scientific knowledge and state-of-the art expertise to anticipate, identify, evaluate, and control health hazards and causes of discomfort in the workplace and other environments. The curriculum covers the most important aspects of human exposure assessment, including air contamination with dust and microorganisms, noise, radiation, and chemical exposures. It also includes risk assessment, biological monitoring, hazardous waste management, and worker training. Graduate courses lead to the degrees of Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

The M.S. program in Environmental and Industrial Hygiene is accredited by the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene through the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET). The Environmental and Industrial Program is a component of the University of Cincinnati Education and Research Center (ERC) supported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Financial support for qualifying students is available from the ERC. In addition, students may apply for special fellowships from the University of Cincinnati.

Molecular Toxicology

The Environmental Toxicology program offers advanced courses and laboratory research on the relationships between environmental exposure and human diseases. Emphasis is placed on developing skills to acquire a better understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms. The curriculum emphasizes current knowledge of cell and molecular biology and physiology to provide basic understanding of sources of exposure, dose deposition, and fate of chemicals in the body. New research facilities are equipped with modern instrumentation. Ph. D. graduates are encouraged to be independent scholars, and have wide career choices in academia, industry, and the federal government. Alumni hold prestigious positions internationally. The M.S. program includes an internship.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The Epidemiology program offers three focus research areas including occupational and environmental epidemiology, genetic/cancer epidemiology and quantitative program. Both the Epidemiology and the Biostatistics programs offer numerous opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills by working with faculty on research projects in a variety of epidemiology and statistics-based studies.

For more information, please go to Division of Epidemiology & Biostatistics' web site.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine program is a clinical and research training program for physicians concerned with the sources, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries resulting from exposure to chemical and physical agents, products, or processes at work or within the community.

The Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of Cincinnati is the oldest continuously operating Occupational Medicine residency in the United States. On average, four residents graduate from the program on a yearly basis. These residents go on to accept positions at other academic institutions, within industrial settings, or within local, state or federal agencies. The residency training program is largely funded by an Education and Research Center Training Grant awarded to the University of Cincinnati by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. In addition to the Residency Training Program, the Division actively supports the Occupational Medicine Training Course for physicians and other health professionals.

Occupational Safety and Ergonomics

This interdisciplinary program is offered in collaboration with the Departments of Environmental Health and Mechanical, Industrial and Nuclear Engineering. The curriculum is designed to provide dual emphasis on the health and engineering aspects of ergonomics and safety. This program will prepare the students to meet the current and future ergonomics/safety concerns of the workforce and the proposed OSHA ergonomics standard.
