Introduction

The Department of Environmental Health is an academic unit within the College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati. Founded in 1930 as the Kettering Laboratory, the Department of Environmental Health has a long history of major contributions to environmental health research.

The mission of the Department of Environmental Health is to improve the quality of life by understanding the causes of environmental damage and identifying the effective methods of prevention

Dating back to 1924, Robert A Kehoe's studies on tetraethyl lead absorption, distribution, and toxicity in exposed workers resulted in the development of guidelines for manufacturing and handling this chemical in industry, as well as the establishment of worker-education programs. Scientists at the Kettering Laboratory also defined guidelines for the handling and toxicity of refrigerants. World War II brought more research including the investigation of food additives, preservation of foodstuffs, and studies on the toxicity of DDT and organophosphate pesticides. In addition, clinical work on the occupational hazards of dioxin began in Cincinnati. Aerosol inhalation studies and other work performed at the Kettering Laboratory also brought attention to the danger of lead-containing paints. In 1992, the first Center for Environmental Genetics in the United States was established in the Department, funded by a grant of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The Department offers graduate training programs in several areas of study, all deal with mechanisms, treatment, and prevention of environment-related disease. These programs cover a broad range of topics in the areas of Environmental and Industrial Hygiene, Molecular Toxicology, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Recently, the Ohio Board of Regents found the Environmental Health graduate training program to be among the very best in the country: "It is one of only five graduate science programs in the state to classify as competitive at the highest national level."
