  • DIAGNOSIS OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS MUTATIONS IN PROSPECTIVE PARENTS

The development of animal models of cystic fibrosis is discussed on page 147 of HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY and page 95 of ESSENTIALS OF HUAMN EMBRYOLOGY. While this research may lead to therapies for cystic fibrosis, current molecular and genetic knowledge does provide a practical means to screen for cystic fibrosis mutations in prospective parents.

Chapter 4 of the book, "Your Genes, Your Choices" describes a current and practical application of this information to a couple who are concerned that they may be carriers of this recessive trait. The chapter discusses diagnostic procedures and options available to couples who utilize genetic screening procedures to predict congential disease in their offspring (Carlos and Mollie Can Have a Perfectly Healthy Baby (or can they)?
