  • FOLIC ACID AND NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS

While the mechanism is not understood, it has recently become apparent
that supplementation of the pregnant mother's diet with folic acid reduces
the risk of neural tube defects in her offspring (HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY, pgs. 95 and
96; ESSENTIALS OF HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY, p. 67). Daily levels of folate intake
required for this effect, the form of supplementation and the nature of
current health initiatives for prevention of neural tube defects are
described on the "Center for Disease Control" website.
