THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT Detailed molecular and genetic knowledge of the human genome
is increasing at an explosive rate, in large measure through efforts coordinated through
the Human Genome Project mentioned on page 486 of HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY and page 330 of
ESSENTIALS OF HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY. This project is organized through the Department of Energy
of the Federal Government.
The strategies, techniques and goals of the project are described in the following two
web sites; "Primer on
Molecular Genetics from the U.S. Department of Energy" and "Exploring the Genomic
Landscape".
The former site provides an informative description of DNA, genes, chromosomes, mapping
strategies and sequencing technologies. It also discusses the development of animal models
of human disease, the interpretation of molecular and genetic data and the impact of this
information on medical practice and our understanding of human development.
The latter site briefly describes the approaches utilized at specific research
laboratories involved in the Human Genome Project and discusses earlier studies of the
physical mapping of human chromosomes 16 and 19.
