  • FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME

Pathogenetic mechanisms underlying holoprosencephaly and fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) are discussed on pages 393, 394, and 404 of HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY (2nd ed.) and on pages 266-268 of ESSENTIALS OF HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY. As noted, it is thought that FAS may be the most common cause of mental retardation in the western world. Since it is caused by the mother's consumption of alcohol, it is also considered to be one of the most preventable congenital conditions. FAS statistics, surveillance methods, and prevention strategies are described on the FAS website of the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION.
