  • DIRECT APPLICATION OF GENETIC ENGINEERING TO HUMANS

Techniques to manipulate the mammalian genome are described on page 28 of HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY and page 18 and 19 of ESSENTIALS OF HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY. These discussions, however, are restricted to general elements of current technology in animal models of congenital disease (transgenic mice) and do not address the direct application of genetic technology to humans briefly discussed in chapter 15 in both books.

Chapter 7 of the book "Your Genes, Your Choices", however, describes in greater detail, some of the practical applications of genetic technology to human health and phenotypic manipulation. This short chapter also describes some of the currently impractical uses of the technology and ethical, legal and social implications of human genetic engineering (Dr. Lu's Patients Have the Right to Be Tall (or do they?)

  • IMAGES OF HUMAN EMBRYOS

This link to a University of New South Wales website provides images of human embryos (whole mounts and sections) from Carnegie stage 7 (initiation of gastrulation; beginning of third week) to Carnegie stage 23 (end of embryonic period).
