The University of Cincinnati Medical Center has a Level 1 Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons. It is a tertiary care referral center for southern Ohio, eastern Indiana, and northern Kentucky, serving a population of approximately 2.2 million people.

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the UC Medical Center is the foundation for the teaching experience of the Surgical/Critical Care fellowships. Currently, the SICU consist of 24 adult beds and is undergoing expansion to 36 beds, which will further enrich the educational experiences of fellows and residents. The Trauma/Critical Care fellow may also acquire experience in the adult Burn Unit (10 beds), the Neurosurgical ICU (20 beds), the Shriners Burn Unit (12 beds) the adult Medical Intensive Care Unit (24 beds) and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to provide Surgical Critical Care Fellows with Pediatric Critical Care.

The Surgical Critical Care fellowship encompasses all aspects of care within the SICU, with strong emphasis on cardiopulmonary mechanics, principles of resuscitation and mechanical ventilation. The fellowship program has been granted Continued Full Accreditation for five years, with no citations or recommendations.  In 2004, the Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education awarded a commendation to “the program director, faculty and institution for the quality of the educational program.”
