Residency Program in Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand SurgeryWith the wide variety and volume of clinical opportunities available at the Children’s Hospital, University Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Shriners Burns Hospital Cincinnati, Cosmetic Surgery at University Pointe and in the surrounding community, the Division provides excellent educational content for students and residents, while delivering first-rate patient care and providing opportunities for collaborative efforts for both clinical and basic science research in plastic surgery. Although each member of the Division has unique areas of interest and expertise, the Division’s major strength is its core value of teamwork, dedication to excellence, and ability to work as a cohesive group. The faculty are dedicated to providing an environment for training plastic surgeons within the entire spectrum of plastic surgery. The Division provides training in the independent (5 + 3) pathway in plastic surgery training as well as the integrated (3 + 3) pathway. The rotations, progression, knowledge, skill and responsibility vary according to the pathway and the individual; however, the ultimate level of proficiency and dedication to core values is the same for all residents. The residency program was given full accreditation in July 2007 for 5 years from the ACGME. University of Cincinnati Surgery: Plastic, Reconstructive and HandA mentored research project is available to all residents, beginning during their internship and extending through their chief residency. The goals are (1) to ensure that residents gain exposure to both basic science and translational research, (2) to facilitate the development of their individual interests, and (3) to oversee completion of a defined study (basic science, translational, or outcome) during their six-year training period. Each resident meets twice yearly with the Residency Research Project Committee. The goal is completion of a particular project during the residency period, culminating in presentation at a national meeting and publication in a reputable journal.
