The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program, which received full accreditation in January 2006, offers state-of-the-art training in treatment for facial trauma, surgical reconstruction of skeletal deformities, facial cosmetic surgery and trauma surgery. The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a four-year program whose principal goal is the training of oral and maxillofacial surgeons to practice the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and to become qualified and prepared to take the Board examination. An optional educational track is available for the M.D. degree. To qualify, the candidate must pass Part I of the National Medical Licensing Exam to enter the third year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati after first completing the four-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program. Candidates must then complete the third and fourth year of medical school, plus one year of internship. Resident OMSSAT (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Self Assessment Test) scores are consistently very competitive with the national average. University of Cincinnati Surgery: Oral and MaxillofacialThe first year of the residency is intended to provide the resident with a comprehensive working knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery, methods of diagnosis, patient management, ambulatory sedation and anesthesia principles, and basic operative techniques. In the second year, residents spend 9 months on off-service rotations and 3 months on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service. The third-year residents alternately spend 5 months on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service and 7 months on off-service rotations. Off-service rotations include anesthesia, plastic surgery, internal medicine, general surgery, trauma, SICU, ENT, and clinical or laboratory research. Chief residents are responsible for the pre- and postoperative care of all oral surgery patients and perform a majority of the oral surgery at University Hospital, as well as perform cases at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and its affiliate campuses, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and other community medical centers.
