Division of Trauma and Critical Care

The Division of Trauma and Critical Care provides excellent care of the seriously injured patient through cutting-edge clinical research and a comprehensive basic science research initiative. University Hospital is the only verified Adult Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, serving Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.

The University of Cincinnati serves as the United States Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (CSTARS) at the Trauma Center of University Hospital. This program provides a clinically relevant training platform for military medics who must remain skilled in trauma and critical care, and is the training platform for all Air Force Critical Care Air Transport Teams. The Cincinnati Business Courier presented the United States Air Force Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) with the inaugural National Health Care Hero Award.

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship encompasses all aspects of care within the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, with a strong emphasis on cardiopulmonary mechanics, principles of resuscitation and mechanical ventilation.

Members of the Division actively promote trauma prevention and education. One of the highlights is the “Out of the Crossfire” program, a hospital-based violence intervention initiative that provides victims of gun violence with new life choices through linkage to community services, resources, and positive peer relationships.
