Welcome from the Chairman of Department

Welcome from the Chairman of Department

On behalf of the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, I welcome you to our Departmental website. Our Department is the preeminent ophthalmic teaching and research center in the tristate region (southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky, southeast Indiana). The expertise of our faculty over the entire spectrum of ophthalmic subspecialties makes our Department the regional center of choice of patients, health care providers, and payers for ophthalmic subspecialty care. Our faculty members have diverse research interests, and their clinical and basic science investigations regularly yield findings and observations that advance the science and art of ophthalmology and lead to improved patient care. Several of our faculty members are world-renowned experts in their subspecialty areas who are frequently invited to lecture to national and international audiences. Our areas of particular expertise include cataract and anterior segment surgery, limbal stem cell transplantation surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and ocular oncology.

Our ophthalmology residency program consistently produces graduate physicians who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to become outstanding clinical ophthalmologists and leaders in their communities. The three-year ophthalmology residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The principal training facilities of the residency program are The University Hospital of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati VA Hospital, and the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Residents in our program consistently perform many more diagnostic evaluations and surgical procedures of various types than are required for certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Our training program for medical students enables them to gain appropriate knowledge and skills to perform basic ophthalmic examinations, recognize important ophthalmic abnormalities, and appreciate the role of ophthalmologists in comprehensive patient care. Our training program in ophthalmic research consistently produces individuals who possess the appropriate knowledge and skills to become successful independent ophthalmic researchers. Our series of Ophthalmology Grand Rounds presentations and occasional subspecialty conferences allow community ophthalmologists to be informed about new discoveries and developments and able to incorporate them into their clinical practices.
