Founded in 1819 by Daniel Drake, the College is almost as old as the City of Cincinnati. From its modest beginnings with a faculty of four and an enrollment of 24 students, the College of Medicine has blossomed, particularly in recent years, into a major research and clinical center with a faculty of over 900 and an enrollment of over 1,000 medical and graduate students. The faculty of the College of Medicine has educated the majority of the physicians in the region and, thereby, sets the standards of quality for healthcare for a very large population. The College is also one of the largest centers of life sciences research in the Midwest. Faculty conduct research which aims to prevent and to cure disease. They are actively involved in assessing the outcomes and effectiveness of present health care practices with the aim of reducing costs, while sustaining quality. College of Medicine faculty educate scientists and technicians who work in biomedical industries in Ohio and throughout the world. They also educate the next generation of faculty and academic leaders for universities and academic research institutes. The College’s faculty and its major affiliated teaching hospitals provide both ambulatory and in-hospital care to children and adults from a wide geographic area, a significant fraction of whom are either underserved or are critically ill and require highly specialized services. Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the VA Medical Center and the Shriners Burns Institute continue their strong support of the College’s teaching and research programs. University Hospital is currently merging many of its clinical programs with the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati to assure the viability of the clinical enterprise in our increasingly competitive marketplace. Through its Joint Operating Agreement with the University, the Health Alliance has pledged support of the College's academic programs. A satisfactory model for funding, governing, and sustaining relevant elements of education and research in our College in conjunction with the Health Alliance must be developed. Uncertainties in the College’s environment require careful planning for optimal use of limited resources. This document presents our academic plan for the next several years. A plan for our clinical programs will be presented in a separate document. Excellent clinical care is key to the success of our medical college. |
