GRADUATE STUDENTS

Steve Angus

- B.A., M.S., Miami University. Currently, a second-year student. His research at Miami centered on the development of a molecular understanding of ciliary motility by analyzing the function of an inner dynein arm. He is interested in the structure and function of all cytoskeletal elements. His hobbies and activities include running, kickboxing, golf, waterskiing, and watching (and quoting) movies. The ability to incorporate good movie quotes into everyday conversation is one that he holds in high regard. He chose to join the Cell and Molecular Biology Program at UC because of the quality research being done and the enjoyable environment created by the faculty and students.

Rachel Bolante

- B.A., University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently, a sixth-year student with Dr. Peter Stambrook. Chose the UC Program because of our well-respected faculty, the wide variety of fields being studied, and because Cincinnati is a good-sized city.

Eric Carlson

- B.A., Thiel College. He is a fourth-year student with Dr. Winston Kao. General research interests include protein chemistry, immunology, and wildlife management. Hobbies and personal interests include hunting, fishing, running, biking, motorcycling, camping, archery, golf, and football. Chose the UC Program because he wished to use the "well-oiled" machine of the Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy department to expand his horizons.

- B.S., Lee College, Tennessee. Currently, a fifth-year student with Dr. Peter Stambrook. Hobbies and personal interests include running, scuba, and spending time with his wife. Chose the UC Program because of the diversity of research offered within the program.

Lucy Gildea

- B.S., Georgetown College. Currently, a sixth-year student with Dr. Simon Newman. Hobbies and personal interests include running, biking, shopping, and basketball. Chose the UC Program because it is multifaceted, diverse, and there are many different interests within the one program.

- B.A., Earlham College (Richmond, IN). Currently, a second-year student. She is a native of Cincinnati. Her primary interest is cancer biology. She loves music (plays the piano and the cello), reading, and playing with her dog, Oscar.

- B.S., Hillsdale College, M.S., Palmer College of Chiropractic. Currently a fourth-year student with Dr. Nira Ben-Jonathan. General research interests include cancer biology and immunology. Kristin Long

- B.A., Capital University (Columbus). Currently a fourth-year student with Dr. Simon Newman. General research interests include cell biology, cancer research, and immunology (particularly allergies). Hobbies and personal interests include sports of all kinds (especially basketball, volleyball, golf, and running), "experimental" cooking, and painting. Chose the UC Program because of its very good reputation as a research school, because the faculty are very friendly and outgoing, and because the students that have graduated from here are now very successful.

Brad Mallory

- B.S., Tennessee State University (Nashville). Currently, a third-year student. He enjoys playing the trombone, pretending to play tennis, exercising, the symphony, cooking and last but not least The Simpson's (favorite television show). He intends on contributing a new flavor and style to this department that will serve to enhance the many great things that are already in progress!

Randall Marsh

- B.Sc., M.Sc., University of Alberta, Canada. Currently a sixth-year student with Dr. Robert Brackenbury. General research interests include cell and molecular biology of intercellular adhesion, both in normal development and in cancer. Hobbies and personal interests include fishing, acupuncture, tai chi, cruisin' the net, and spending time with his fiancée, Heather. Chose the UC Program because he met Dr. Brackenbury at an ASCB meeting in Boston and was overwhelmed by Brack's impeccable sense of fashion. Hence, he came to UC to learn how to dress like that. Oh, and maybe to learn a little quality science.

Shekar Menon

- B.T., Anna University, Madras, India; M.S., Anna University, Madras, India. Currently, a third-year student. He worked on detection and characterization of a phytoplasma for his master's degree. Comes from a small city in the southern region of India called Cochin (Kochi), which incidentally is also the spice capital of the world. He also enjoys listening to semi-classical Indian music, reading, and ornithology.

Jim Muth

- B.A., Thiel College. Currently a fifth-year student with Dr. Arnold Schwartz. General research interests include structural and functional aspects of calcium channels. Hobbies and personal interests include outdoor activities, tennis, and autmobile restoration. Chose the UC Program because it is a strong program, dedicated to the education and scientific growth of students.

David Myer

- B.S., The Ohio State University. Currently, a third-year student. He enjoys reading literature that deals with pride and envy. However, science fiction stories are his favorite. He became interested in cell cycle related topics while studying thymidylate synthase expression at OSU.
