Educational Program

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) envisions medical student education as an integrated, systematic and student centered learning process rooted in the principles of both population based medicine and patient centered medical care. Students are provided with a generalist medical education. UCCOM graduates are highly respected for their clinical skills and prepared to further their medical education in any specialty they choose. Our graduates have been selected for residency training at many prestigious academic medical centers and teaching hospitals.

Years 1 and 2

The curriculum of the first two years is structured as disciplined based courses with emphasis on the integration of the basic sciences underlying clinical medicine. Clinical relevance of the basic sciences is fostered through the use of small group interactive problem solving activities. Early clinical exposure is highlighted. In the first year the emphasis is on the medical interview with the use of both standardized patients and live patient sessions. The second year provides an increasing emphasis on the physical examination and physical diagnosis again with significant patient contact.

Years 3 and 4: The Clinical Biennium

Having mastered the competencies of the first two years, the student progresses into our highly rated Clinical Biennium. The core clerkships of Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry are supplemented with a required Neuroscience experience. In the third year the student has the opportunity to participate in subspecialty electives designed to assist with career choice. The Acting Internship in the fourth year provides the student with the opportunity for high level clinical responsibility in patient management. Our program on Cost Effective and Efficient Clinical Decision Making helps to focus on some of the realities of modern day clinical practice. The fourth year also allows the student the choice of several elective experiences.
