    Vilter Era Cont...

    Dr. Vilter ~ Assistant Dean

    • 1943 ~ Dr. Vilter goes from Chief Resident to Assistant Dean
      of the College of Medicine.
        - This earns him $3,000/yr!
    • 85 students total
        - currently 157 per class!
    • The world is at War
        - WW II 1939-1945


    1946 ~Associate Professor

    • Vilter brothers were working on nutritional anemias in the Hematology
      Lab under Dr. Tom Spies.
        - Established the connection between B12 and pernicious anemia.
        - Dr. Spies stole the thunder and published the data.
    • Dr. Vilter gains support of Dr. Blankenhorn and Dean Dorst to set up his own lab!

    1947 ~ Dr. Vilter and the Mob

    • “It was March 1947 and midnight…”
    • $1000 from Sleep Out Louie
    • Clara B. Vilter fund created with 4 months salary of $850
    • Laboratory of Hematology and Nutrition established

    Gifts and Grants

    • Nikel Endowment Fund ~ $100,000
        - Estate of a patient with pernicious anemia
    • Cairns Endowment Fund
        - Estate of school teacher patient of Dr. Vilter
    • National Vitamin Foundation, Merck, Lederle, Squibb and ultimately the NIH.
    • 1956 two Divisions are created from the Lab
        - Hematology
        - Nutrition

    Chair 1956-1979

    • Third Gordon and Helen Taylor Professor of Medicine
    • Golden Age of government sponsored research and private philanthropy
    • Started with 15 full time geographic faculty and grew it to over 100.
    • Department budget grew from $400,000/yr to $6.5 million!

    Vilter Era

    • Accomplished a completely full time system for Dept. of Medicine faculty
    • Heart Station = Division of Cardiology
    • Gastric Lab = Division of Gastroenterolgy
    • Division of Chest Disease sets up first pulmonary function lab in Cincinnati.
    • Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology
    • Division of Medical Immunology created through the McDonald
          Foundation Endowment

    Accolades for Dr. Vilter

    • Author of over 120 scientific publications
    • Numerous Literary Club writings
    • Numerous national advisory, editorial and administrative positions.
    • Many awards
        - Daniel Drake Award
        - March of Dimes Physician of the Year
        - Joseph Goldberger Award AMA

    Dr. Vilter .Master American College of Physicians

    • 1963-69 Ohio Governor of the ACP
    • 1971-80 Regent
    • 1974-78 Secretary General
    • 1979 President of the ACP
    • 2002 Laureate Award
