    Albert Sabin, MD

    “Sabin Sunday” April 24, 1960

    • First US test of Albert Sabin’s live polio vaccine
        - 20,000 vaccinated 1st day
    • Advantages:
        - Ease of administration
        - Intestinal and bodily immunity
        - Life long immunity
        - Breaks the chain of transmission
    • Disadvantages:
        - Live virus spread: VAPP
        - One in 2.5 million doses usually in naïve hosts

    Albert Sabin, MD

    • Born in Poland
    • Rockefeller Institute
    • 1939-Associate Professor of Pediatrics
          Children’s Hospital
    • Research interests:
        - Pneumonia
        - Encephalitis
        - Toxoplasmosis
        - Sandfly and Dengue fever
        - Cancer
        - virology
    • 1965-1966 worldwide use prevented 5 million cases of
          polio and 500,000 deaths!
    • 1972 Sabin donated strains of polio to the WHO
    • Never patented the vaccine!
    • Received the National Medal of Science 1970

    Albert Sabin, MD

    • Continued to work at 80 years of age
    • Later years did research on cancer vaccines
    • Died 1993 at the age of 87
    • Buried in Arlington National Cemetary
