    College of Medicine History: 1880 - 1900

    “The time has passed, here at least, when industry and
    ambition can be set down as incompatible with
    social station and feminine refinement”

    Women in Medicine

    • In 1883, the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery
      becomes first med school in Cincinnati to admit females

        Laura Memorial College in 1894, 618 W. Sixth Street

    Julia Carpenter (1840-1915)

    • Born in Cincinnati
    • Graduate of Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania
    • Post-Graduate training in Europe
    • Faculty of Laura Memorial College
    • First woman elected to the Cincinnati
      Academy of Medicine in 1878
      - Later served as Vice-President

    James T. Whittacker (1843-1900)

    • Born in Cincinnati, graduate of MCO in 1867
    • Studied extensively in Europe
    • Became Professor of Practice of Medicine
      in 1879 until his death in 1900
    • Wrote “Theory and Practice of Medicine”
      in 1893, bringing European science to U.S.
    • Valedictory address to MCO graduating Class of 1891:


    • “Purpose, persistence, patience, furnish finally the
      power of concentration, and the fruit of concentration
      is what the world calls the work of genius”

    Frederick Forchheimer.(1853-1913)

    • Graduate of MCO, pursued post- graduate studies in Vienna
    • Chair of the Theory and Practice of Medicine 1901-1913
    • Key role in merger of MCO and MMC in 1908
    • Established need for special care of children
      - Considered first professor of pediatrics in America
      - Opened outpatient clinic for children at Cincinnati Hospital in 1890
      - Founding member of American Pediatrics Society in 1888,
      and its President in 1895
