    History & Highlights

    College of Medicine History: 1940 - 1970

    Evelyn Hess, MD, MACP

    • Born in Dublin, Ireland
    • Residency in London, England
    • 1969 ~ McDonald Professor of Medicine
    • Over 100 scientific journal publications, founded and
          served on many committees, organizations
    • Active with education: students, patients, community,
           state and national leaders
    • Governor of Ohio ACP


    Dr. Noble Fowler

    • Chief Resident 1947-1948 followed by cardiology fellowship under Dr. Johnson McGuire
    • Chief of Medicine at the VA 1957
    • Director Division of Cardiology 1970-86
        - One of the first $1 million NIH research grants
    • Expert in pulmonary HTN, pericardial disease and pathophysiology of cardiac tamponade.
    • Written and edited 12 textbooks, 139 major journal articles, numerous NIH grants.

    Dr. Helen Glueck

    • Graduated from UC College of Medicine 1934.
    • Residency General Hospital
    • 1945-57: Director of Student Health
    • 1957: Director of Coagulation Laboratory
    • Saved many lives by discovering cause for hemorrhagic
          disease of the newborn ~ vitamin K
        - 1966 ~ one of the first female Professors of Medicine
    • Daniel Drake Award winner

    Herbert Flessa, MD, MACP

    • Graduated from UC College of Medicine
    • Residency at General Hospital
    • Late 1960’s Director of Ambulatory Services including emergency room.
        - CGH saw over 100,000 patients/year in the ER
    • Created the first Emergency Medicine training program in the country.
    • Governor of Ohio ACP
    • Continues to be an active teacher, mentor, role model and makes house calls!

    Growth and Development

    • 1951 - Mont Reid completed
    • 1959 - First intensive care unit opens at CGH
    • 1960 - transfer from city to UC
    • 1967 - Hamilton County Tax Levy

    New Hospital 1969

    • Nine story, 650 beds
    • 10 years in the making
    • Funded by a city bond issue
    • Private patients were cared for in Holmes Hospital
    • 1979 two hospitals operate together
