More about the SSE@UC
What will you learn?
Although
you will be exposed to a number of surgical subspecialties and non-surgical
specialties which support and complement CT surgeons, your primary
focus will be cardiothoracic surgery.
You will
be taught basic cardiopulmonary anatomy using both lecture and lab.
You will also learn about and observe the various diagnostic tools
that cardiologists and heart surgeons use (cardiac echos, angiograms,
etc.) You can even look forward to seminars on heart sounds, basic
suturing, and intubations.
The daily schedule
Most of the ten days will begin at 8AM. Days in which students observe surgical procedures or shadow can begin as early as 6AM.
Days are packed full of observation, hands-on experiences, lectures, and small group activities.
Most
days will end around 5PM. Educational conferences and other activities
like extra shadowing sometimes take place in the evening. Evenings
and the weekend are typically free time for participants. Some organized
social and city exploring outings are offered.

The case presentation
Students
are broken into teams and presented with a clinical case at the beginning
of the ten day program. Each team works together to “solve” the case
and present their findings at the conclusion of the program to surgery
faculty.
Faculty
Dozens of top faculty from a variety of different clinical and basic sciences departments work with SSE@UC students. Many of our faculty are world renown—several have even appeared on television and internet media like the Discovery Channel!
