The R.O.S.E. program is part internship, part early acceptance to medical school, and part mentorship program. The purpose of the program is to provide stimulating experiences and contact with academic medical faculty for high ability, intellectually curious pre-medical college students.

It’s called R.O.S.E. because students learn about medicine by actively participating in Research, Observation, Service, and Education experiences coordinated by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Ideally, all four sets of experiences will have a common thread and students become “junior experts” on a specific medical topic (disease, treatment, etc.).

The goal of the research component is for the student to learn how to design and produce good research, the role of research in contemporary medicine, and research methodology.

Students accomplish this goal by participating in current research being done at the University of Cincinnati Academic Medical Center via summer internship.  Research can be clinical, translational, or bench.

The goal of the observation component is for the student to have a better understanding of the physician’s daily duties and the physician’s role in patient care.

The College of Medicine assists in the placement process. Students will shadow physicians in Cincinnati (time permitting) during the first R.O.S.E. summer as well as in their own “hometowns” during academic breaks and near their undergraduate campuses during the academic year.

The goal of the service component is for the student to have a greater awareness of the role that service / support organizations play for patients and their families as well as the community.

Students identify a service project or service organization where they can contribute. Students volunteer in their own “hometowns” during academic breaks and near their undergraduate campuses during the academic year.

The goal of the education component is to help the student see medicine in a variety of contexts. All R.O.S.E. students will meet weekly with a faculty member during the summer internship for small group discussions on a variety of healthcare topics.
