The Department of Public Health Sciences is the newest department in the UC College of Medicine.
Created in September, 2006, its purpose is to lead and focus efforts at the University in public
health education, in public health systems research, and in community-focused partnerships
to improve the health status and health care of individuals and communities.
Our three-fold mission involves teaching, research and service:
In teaching, our faculty prepare individuals who seek careers as public health
practitioners, researchers, or teachers to safeguard and improve the public’s health.
We additionally train a variety of health professionals in the arts and sciences of population
health: epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems and policy, environmental health,
behavioral and social sciences, and others.
In research, we apply an evidence-based approach to the emerging field of public
health systems research in order to generate innovative solutions to the critical public health
challenges facing the region, nation and world.
In service, we partner with university and community colleagues to improve efforts
to protect and enhance health status and health care, particularly for vulnerable populations
locally, regionally, and beyond.
The Department is the academic home for the university’s new Master of Public Health degree program,
which is now enrolling its first class for Fall, 2008 matriculation. For more information on the
