Stephen Katkowsky, MD
Associate Professor

Dr. Katkowsky joined the Northern Kentucky Health Department in February of 2008. He serves as the District Health Officer for a 4 county district with a population approaching 400,000. Prior to relocating to Northern Kentucky Steve spent 8 years in Atlanta, Georgia. For a number of those years he served as the Fulton County Health Officer where he oversaw a staff of 750, an annual budget of $42 million, 12 local health centers and a wide variety of health programs.

The beginning and expansion of public health as a primary responder in cases of emergency preparedness and bioterrorism occurred on his watch following the tragedy of 9/11.

He has been involved in public health training serving as a member of the faculty of the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati and the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. He taught and supervised medical residents and students in the CDC’s Preventive Medicine Residency program. In Fulton County and again in Northern Kentucky he has established Public Health Institutes to provide experiential learning opportunities for students of public health.

Prior to his tenure in Fulton County Steve served in public health departments in Maryland and Florida. This has enabled him to gain widespread experience in seeing alternative approaches to the delivery of public health services. It aided him in formulating a public health approach he defines as eclectic as he uses positive aspects of other programs he has observed.

A strong proponent of the adoption the Ten Essentials of Public Health and the Accreditation of Public Health Departments he is actively involved with several professional organizations.

Dr. Katkowsky has published a number of public health related articles, testified before the US Senate, and has been a speaker for many public health meetings and symposia.
