Dr. Elder earned a BS in Biology (1978) and an MD (1983) from the University of Minnesota. She then completed a residency in Family Medicine at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She practiced family medicine in Arizona and Lesotho, Africa, for four years before completing an Academic Family Medicine Fellowship and earning her Masters in Public Health at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992. Prior to joining the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Cincinnati in 2001, Dr. Elder was on the faculty of Oregon Health Sciences University for eight years. Dr. Elder maintains an active clinical practice caring for the homeless population of Cincinnati via a mobile medical clinic.
Dr. Elder's research interests focus on patient safety and medical errors in the primary care setting. She has been the receipient of funding from both private foundations and the Agency for Healthcare Reseach and Quality for this work. She is well known in the primary care research community for her qualitative research skills, and has presented methodological seminars and courses at many national and regional meetings.
