Education
Because Public Health Sciences is a new department, our educational portfolio is a work in progress. Within this portfolio, however, there is already an array of educational programs targeted toward a variety of different types of learners.

Degree Programs
The university's new Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program is housed within the Department of Public Health Sciences. The mission of the program is to train graduates who can provide leadership in generating, evaluating, and applying evidence to safeguard and improve the public's health in the twenty-first century. The program offers concentrations in the areas of Public Health Management and Leadership, Health Education / Health Promotion, and a concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics is being developed. Learn more about the MPH degree.

In addition, several joint degree programs are in the planning stage and may be available as early as the Autumn quarter of 2009. Among the joint degree programs in development, there is a “doctor of medicine and master of public health” degree (MD/MPH) that is being created in partnership with the UC College of Medicine. Similarly, there is a “master of nursing and master of public health” degree that is being created in partnership with the UC College of Nursing, and that joint degree program will have a particular emphasis on public health nursing. Other joint programs are in the exploratory phase.

Other Coursework
Faculty of the department are involved in coursework in the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and a number of programs within the Graduate School. Interested students and others should contact faculty directly regarding non-MPH academic courses.

Seminars
The department sponsors a number of seminar series relating to health services research, often in partnership with other colleges or departments. These seminar series include the Public Health Grand Rounds, the Health Policy Forum, the Health Outcomes Seminar, the Spirituality and Health Conference, the Qualitative Methods Seminar, and the Clinical Effectiveness Conference. The Health Outcomes Seminar and Clinical Effectiveness Conference are directed and co-sponsored by the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine. The Qualitative Methods Seminar is lead by the College of Nursing. The Spirituality and Health Conference is directed by the Department of Family Medicine.

Other Educational Offerings
Internships and informal learning opportunities are periodically available. Most of these opportunities arise from the externally funded projects of the faculty. These opportunities will be posted as they become available.
