The Class of '72 Challenge Reunion Row was a great success. The Class of '72 did not win, but we had a great time!! It was truly a lot of fun- there was great excitement, there were lots of fans... It looks like a new tradition has been started! The Tech & Technique even sent photographers there (we didn't make The Tech, but maybe Technique....)
There were 3 eights and one four in the race (the four was given a lead at the start) which went from the Harvard Bridge to the Boathouse (500 meters). Also, the Class of '47 had a boat that rowed but didn't race.
We did our best, but somehow, the Class of '92 managed to beat us (as did the other classes). Our start didn't work as well as it had in our warm-up, and we were quickly behind by a length. The 500 meter event just didn't give us enough room to catch up.... after our start (half-half-three quarters plus twenty strokes), there were only about twenty more strokes in the race.
Stu Schmill (current head coach) and Susan Tomases (from the Alumni
Association) did a great job organizing the event. All of the oarsmen
and coxswains received new rowing shirts to compete in. And there
was a
trophy (to remain in the boathouse trophy case) for the winning team.
It was great! Thank you Stu and Susan. Coach Peter Holland
(now retired) was the official starter. We were all glad to see him
there.
Here's what our boat looked like:
cox- David Burns
stroke- Daniel Vargas Reyes
7- Dennis Lynch
6- Mike Rowny
5- Vance Smith
4- Doug Zingale
3- Dave Evans
2- Tom Bissell
1- David Gluss
There were three other Class of '72 participants-
Harry Ostrer filled seat
1 in the Class of '47 boat
Slayton Tuggle filled the
coxswain seat in that same boat
David Millman was at the
boathouse and ready to row in case he was needed, but unfortunately he
didn't get to row, as there were no more available seats. Thank you
David for being available. I'm sorry we
weren't able to find a seat for you. We do appreciate your being
there.
As I said before, we didn't win, but we really had fun. It was great to be there with the other Class of '72 oarsmen; and it was great to be in the boat again.
See you in five years!! Perhaps we could have 2 boats in the event at our 30th reunion.
